UC Davis Veterinary Techicians Among the Best
Three UC Davis staff members received awards from the Sacramento Valley chapter of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences (SVAALAS). Shandell Solbach, Animal Resources Supervisor for the Center for Laboratory Animal Science, was named Technician of the Year. Clinical Veterinarian Terry Hewett, DVM received the Member of the Year award. Sherri Goss, Training Coordinator received the Purina Award recognizing her accomplishments in training and mentoring research staff and technicians. Terry and Sherri are members of CVS.
Shandell Solbach, Technician of the Year
As an Animal Resources Supervisor for the Center for Lab Animal Science, Shandell oversees the care of many different species. The award recognizes her dedication to the profession through excellent animal care and staff training. Shandell has helped create a staff development plan that prepares technicians to provide the best possible care while achieving upward mobility in the profession. She is known for her willingness to fill in for absent co-workers so that the animals receive the best possible care. Shandell exemplifies the type of person needed to manage animal care facilities.
Terry Hewett, DVM, Member of the Year
Terry is a Clinical Veterinarian for UC Davis Campus Veterinary Services. As the 2007 SVAALAS Education Committee Chair, Terry provided innovative educational opportunities for the SVAALAS members. Terry won the branch contest for signing up the most members in 2007. She has provided many ideas for increasing participation and membership and is a mentor and supporter to technicians who wish to improve their knowledge of lab animal science.
Sherri Goss, Purina Award
Sherri is the Training Coordinator for Campus Veterinary Services. In this role she has helped many individuals pass the AALAS certification exams, achieving a 100% pass rate thus far. Sherri teaches and prepares animal technicians and researchers in lab animal skills. She has participated in the Veterinary Technicians Committee, which is supported by National AALAS, to educate and recruit veterinary technicians into the lab animals science community.

| Stan Nosek, Dave Phillips and Chris Cioni accept a $1,246,278 rebate from PG&E representatives DAve Hinshaw, Charles Madison and Clay Schmidt. The rebate represents energy savings resulting from the Central Plant Chiller Replacement Project. |
Thanks a million!
(One million two hundred forty six thousand two hundred seventy eight, to be exact.)
PG&E presented UC Davis with a check for $1,246,278 for energy savings resulting from the Central Plant Chiller Replacement Project. Savings were calculated by the net benefit of using the new chillers. To calculate this benefit, PG&E consultants developed complex computer models to simulate energy usage. They accounted for many variables, such as the weather differences between 2006 and 2007, new buildings that came on line during this time period, etc. The result of their calculations was a savings of 1,246,278 Therms of natural gas. The check represents a rebate of $1 per Therm saved. It also represents great work by the A&E project team with support from ORMP which expedited funding for the project. OOA helps welcome a former president
When former president Bill Clinton visited our campus last week, the Office of Administration had no small part in making sure things went smoothly. The Emergency Operations Center headed by Valerie Lucas geared up and was poised to deal with any emergencies, including helping to turn away the thousands who could not fit into the packed ARC Pavilion. The UCD Police Department handled all security for the campus and the venue. Chief of Police Annette Spicuzza (pictured with Mr. Clinton) and Lt. Matt Carmichael commented on how well behaved the crowd was. "I can't say enough about how well behaved the people were," said Chief Spicuzza. Lt. Carmichael added that "even those who stood in line for hours in the cold politely retreated.." One person left a purse and wallet behind, and it was returned to her in tact. "That's very typical of this campus," Carmichael said. Let us know how your department contributed to this event!
Willie Lopez fund established
The Accounting & Financial Services Department of UC Davis and the Lopez Family will be constructing a memorial to honor the outstanding contributions that Willie Lopez made to the University community. The memorial will be funded through donations from individuals wishing to honor his accomplishments. All who wish to join in this endeavor are welcomed to contribute. Download the contribution form. (PDF). Read more about Willie Lopez.
Work-Life staff accomplishments
Barbara Ashby, manager of Work-Life at UC Davis, who recently received the Work-Life Rising Star award from the Alliance for Work-Life Progress (AWLP) has again been honored by the organization. As a new appointee to the AWLP Strategy Board she will have even broader opportunities to provide “advocacy and thought leadership to the work-life field.” AWLP previously honored her for her role in launching UC Davis' award-winning breastfeeding support program and three on-site child development centers. We are lucky to have Barbara as our advocate for work-life integration. Congratulations, Barbara!
Paula Driver Shimada, Work Life Coordinator, has successfully completed the UC Davis Extension Certificate Program in Human Resources Development and Management -- a rigorous 240-hour course covering principles, practices, regulations and developments in HR. All this to better assist us in balancing the challenges and rewards of our work and personal lives. Thank you Paula! Learn more about Work-Life's services.
Parking Services makes a great impression with its Courtesy Notice program
First-time offenders who go overtime at campus meters or forget to display their parking permits now get a break. Instead of a citation, they get a courtesy notice advising them of the parking policy. This policy has been a great success. It certainly made a positive impression on Terry Westover, who took the time to e-mail TAPS. “I wanted to let you and your enforcement officer know how much I appreciate receiving just the warning, not a ticket,” she wrote. “The officer took the time to look inside my car and see that I had a permit, I just had forgotten to hang it on the mirror as I should have done. That’s very kind and above the call of duty – I am grateful for the consideration.” Eugene Nunes was the parking enforcement officer who went the extra mile to avoid handing out a citation to Ms. Westover. Cliff Contreras, head of TAPS, said it best, “Way to go, Geno!”

New fire truck fully wired
The UC Fire Department has put a new truck into service. Unlike other UCDFD trucks, it's not white. When this reporter asked, "Why is it red, not white?" the answer was "Because that's what color fire trucks are supposed to be!" The UC Davis Fire and Police departments have added computer monitors, GPS and other technologies to all their vehicles. OOA experts in the national news
Alice Provost MFT, an employee assistance counselor, served as a source for a New York Times article on perfectionism. “Unhappy? Self-Critical? Maybe You're Just a Perfectionist” by Benedict Carey ran December 4, 2007. Provost has provided group therapy for UC Davis staff members struggling with perfectionist impulses.
The Seattle Post Intelligencer quoted David Takemoto-Weerts, TAPS bicycle program coordinator, in an article about the merits of bicycle licensing programs. The article, Should bicyclists be licensed to ride?, referred to our bike registration program as “one of the nation's largest and best-known.”
In memory of our OOA colleagues
We were deeply saddened this fall by the passing of three of our long-time employees: Ann Davies-Nesbitt served the campus for 16 years as a committed staff member in Transportation and Parking Services. Her kindness and customer-focused perspective made her a valued co-worker and an effective campus alternative transportation coordinator.
Kathleen Moore worked for the University of California for 28 years, the last 17 spent here at Davis. Most recently, she served as an assistant vice chancellor for the Office of Administration. Kathleen brought many talents to the workplace, three of which were her intelligence, her insight and her ability to see the big picture. An endowment has been established in Kathleen’s name to provide "need-based career advancement awards" for staff within the offices of Administration and Resource Management & Planning. Moore Fund awards will cover expenses not ordinarily reimbursable with university funds. Contribution checks can be sent to the UC Davis Foundation, 1460 Drew Avenue, Davis, CA 95618, or through campus mail. Please write "Kathleen Moore Memorial Fund" in the note line.
Willie Lopez had a friendly manner and vast knowledge of travel and entertainment matters that made him a great asset to Accounting & Financial Services in his role as travel and entertainment administrator. A UCD employee for 35 years, he was known and respected throughout campus and will be remembered as a man of honor, humor and compassion. Willie's death will likely lead to safer routes for bicycle commuters to Davis. According to the Sacramento Bee, "In the wake of Lopez's death, the county plans to widen sections of some routes favored by cyclists. At the same time, proposals are emerging to create a route only for bicycles and electric vehicles from Davis to Woodland." (full Sacramento Bee article)
We will fondly remember our colleagues for their loyalty and dedication to our campus. UC Davis is a better organization because of their lasting contributions and successes in servicing the UC Davis academic mission.
