Kim Osmonson: Energy Ambassador

Kim Osmonson

Check out Kim's Hints & Tips to save energy around the office.

What are we actually expected to achieve?

Here's a partial list of sustainability targets specified by university policy:

Zero Waste by 2020 (How-to guide)

Green house gas emissions cut to 1990 levels by 2020.

All new buildings must outperform the California Energy Code (title 24) by at least 20%.

All renovated facilities must meet or exceed Campus Baseline Building points.

By 2010, 20% of electrical energy will be from renewable sources.

UC will develop a plan for placing renewable power projects in campus facilities with the goal of providing up to 10 megawatts of local renewable power by 2014.

Reduce energy use 10% by 2014, with the year 2000 as a baseline.

Buy 10% renewable energy off the grid by 2010 (subject to funding availability).

Increase use of low- or zero-emission vehicles by 50% by 2010, with 2004 as a baseline.

Convert campus vehicles to 50% non-carbon-based fuel by 2010.

Each campus will implement a pre-tax transit pass program by 2009.

UC will transition all locations to electronic and paperless processes and use web-based catalogs and programs.

Janitorial supplies will be made from 100% recycled content paper.

The University requires a take-back program for all electronics packaging.

Environmentally responsible packaging must be at least one -- preferably all -- of the following:
> 100% post consumer recycled
> recyclable
> non-toxic
> biodegradable
> use least packaging required
> use no packaging whenever possible.

6 Sustainability Strategies
and How to Participate

The University of California policy on sustainability (PDF) includes six broad strategies for achieving a sustainable system. Here's the "Cliff Notes" version, including some ways to directly participate. The policy allows for budget constraints and programmatic requirements, and it makes exceptions for acute care facilities, but it is clearly designed for institutional as well as personal commitment.

  1. Build sustainability into all new and renovated facility.
    • Every facet of every capital project should be reviewed with an eye toward this requirement.
    • Campus contact: your capital project architect or project manager

  2. Minimize the use of non-renewable energy. Use local renewable energy, buy green power from the grid, reduce energy use.
    • Turn off lights and computers at night, print double sided by default. Update appliances to Energy Star rated models.
    • Campus contact: your office manager (lights, printers, computers) or the campus sustainability committee (appliance replacement)

  3. Use alternative means of transportation to, from and within campus.
    • Carpool and use public transportation, request hybrid and electric fleet vehicles. Live near campus, if possible or take advantage of the university's on-campus, affordable housing program.
    • Campus contact: Fleet services for campus vehicle options

  4. Minimize greenhouse gas emissions.
    • Drive less, bike more, carpool, use public transportation, consider a hybrid vehicle for your next auto purchase.

  5. Minimize waste sent to landfills.
    • Make all events Zero Waste, take your own coffee cup and reusable container to campus eateries when you buy your coffee or lunch, keep table ware at the office, recycle...
    • Campus contact: R4 Recycling
  6. Leverage the UC system's purchasing power to meet sustainability goals.
      • Already, the paper you buy through the university is 30% recycled yet costs the same as virgin paper thanks to Strategic Sourcing.
      • Campus contacts: your office manager or Purchasing and Business contracts
